Road Research Laboratory

Dept of Roads, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University

On March 2, 1999, the Rector’s Office of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University made a decision to establish a Road Research Laboratory at the Dept of Roads and approved its articles of association. On May 11, 1999, a joint laboratory of the Dept of Roads of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and City Maintenance Division of Vilnius Municipality was established. The main aims of the Road Research Laboratory are testing of road constructing materials, research of streets and roads pavement structures, application of advanced technologies, tests of performance of pavement, patting forward recommendations on improvement of street and road building quality.

On November 4, 2004, the Lithuanian National Accreditation Bureau accredited the Road Research Laboratory with an accreditation certificate No LA. 01.063 certifying its compliance with the requirement of LST EN ISO/IEC 17025:2006. The Road Research Laboratory is accredited to carry out testing and sampling hot mix asphalts, soils and aggregates; measuring of static and dynamic deformation modulus of road pavement structure layers.

The Laboratory has been assessed by the Ministry of Environment. Certificate No 1157 grants the right to the Laboratory to partial design of a structure, technical supervision of a structure within the category of special structure (transport communications) and within the group “place of movement of cars, railway and air transport and pedestrians, including structures and buildings”. Certificate No 0020 grants the right to the Laboratory to perform partial expertise of the project of a structure, technical expertise of a structure, and financial-economic expertise of a structure in the groups of transport communication structures.

The Road Research Laboratory should make its contribution to the quality improvement of Lithuanian roads and streets, expansion of their maintenance duration, economy of taxpayer’s money and carrier’s funds, improvement of environmental situation on
streets and roads (long-term pavement has less hollows, generates lower noise and emissions), and improvement of traffic safety.

Directions of research activities of the Road Research Laboratory:

• tests on road constructing materials;

• tests and improvement of roads and streets pavement structures;

• investigations of airports pavement structures materials;

• tests and application of new road constructing technologies;

• quality assurance in building, repairs and maintenance of roads and streets.

Tests and services offered by the Laboratory:

• testing soils and aggregates;

• testing bitumen;

• testing asphalt mixes;

• measurements of deformation modulus of roads and streets pavement layers;

• selections of sampling objects;

• measurements of streets and roads pavements cohesion and roughness;

• methodical and technical help for the beginners to work with new materials, mixtures and pavement constructions;

• evaluation of airports pavements classification number (PCN);

• partial expertise of projects of roads, streets and their structures;

• technical supervision of roads and streets construction.
