The 7th International Conference Environmental Engineering

 

 

On 22-23 May 2008 the Faculty of Environmental Engineering of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University held the 7th International Conference Environmental Engineering.

Environmental engineering is the one of most challenging area of general engineering, because of its complexity, applicability and interdisciplinary. Environmental problems and issues are driven by different forces interested in sustainable development of society. Conference Environmental Engineering is devoted to the analysis of relevant environmental and water engineering issues as well as to the spread of the key road and railway researches, the presentation of the state-of-the-art geodesy and cadastre technologies, the analysis, assessment and optimization of researches on the energy supply and use systems. The main goals of the Conference are the following:

  • to facilitate direct discussions and versatile cooperation between researchers from Lithuanian and foreign science and education institutions, engineers, representatives of industry and municipalities

  • to bring together potential partners for successful, long-term and continuous cooperation on environmental engineering

  • to discuss further directions of the applied research development and to implement state-of-the-art researches in practice.

The first International Conference Environmental Engineering was held in 1994. About 400 participants from 23 countries took part in the 7th International Conference and made presentations in 6 sections:

1. Environmental Protection;

2. Water Management and Hydraulics;

3. Energy for Buildings;

4. Urban Transport System;

5. Roads and Railways;

6. Technologies of Geodesy and Cadastre.

Before the Conference, 234 conference articles, considered most significant and original, were selected by the International Scientific Committee and published in the Conference Proceeding Book. Different scientific and practical problems were discussed in each section:

1. Environmental Protection

The control and minimization of environmental pollution; Environmental pollution management and mathematical modelling application for environmental protection; Environmental law; Pollution prevention; Sustainable development and cleaner production; Indoor environment; Renewable energy sources, nature resource management.

2. Water Engineering

Drinking water quality and treatment; Wastewater treatment and sludge utilization; Modeling of water and wastewater networks, leakage/infiltration control; Water management economy; Protection of water re-sources and monitoring; Water management based on river basins; Hydraulic calculations and modeling; Hydrotechnical structures; Hydropower.

3. Urban Transport Systems

Urban street network; Mobility of inhabitants, mobility management, transportation needs; Traffic capacity of street and intersection, traffic control and simulation; Public transport, benchmarking in public transport, infrastructure of urban transport; Evaluation of transport impact on environment.

4. Roads and Railways

Modernization of network roads and railways; Designing of roads and railways; Constructing and repairing of roads and railways; Maintenance of roads and railways; Reliability of roads and railways; Roads traffic safety; Urban transport specialist quality of further education.

5. Geodesy and Cadastre Technology

Mapping technologies; Studies and measurements of Earth’s shape; Geodetic networks; Monitoring and application of the permanent GPS stations; Land management and Real Estate Cadastre.

6. Energy for Buildings

Energy generation and supply: heat sources and CHP plants, district heating network, gas network. Sustainable building services: energy saving and heat retention, HVAC systems, integrated HVAC design. Indoor climate: indoor air quality, air distribution, cost effects and benefits of good IAQ. Business and equipment for building: company or equipment presentation, management of HVAC services.

In the section of Roads and Railways more than 70 participants took part representing 7 countries (Lithuania, Poland, Estonia, Russia, Belarus, Romania and Finland). 18 presentations were made and 3 stand presentations.

Presentations studied the problems related to the construction of asphalt concrete road pavements, production of hot asphalt mixtures and the use of geosynthetic materials in road pavement structures. A large attention was paid to solving the problems of road traffic safety, road design and roadside zone pollution. Part of the participants discussed the results of investigation of roads and other structures and the problems of their maintenance.

A large attention in this section was also paid to the methods for the determination of road pavement structural strength and the equipment used, for the identification of criteria of pavement strength, analysis of possibilities to use the recycled asphalt for the production of hot asphalt mixtures.

Participants of this section had a possibility to go to a technical tour and to get familiar with a test road section of Lithuanian experimental road pavement structures. The main technical data of this road section and the planned experimental investigations are presented in a separate article of this Journal issue.

We think that the active participation of the scientists of different countries, demanding activities of the Conference’s Scientific Committee, strict selection and review of presentations enabled us to ensure a rather high scientific level of the Conference. The Conference helped to enlarge the knowledge of each participant and to strengthen international cooperation, gave a possibility for the colleagues of different scientific fields to make a friendly communication.
